The comparison nobody makes properly
These two get set against each other constantly, almost always on the wrong axis. People argue about which is hotter.
Neither is hotter. Ooni publishes 950°F for the Koda 16. Gozney publishes 950°F for the Roccbox. Same ceiling, both from the manufacturer, and both comfortably above the heat a 60–90 second Neapolitan bake needs.
Once you accept that, the decision gets much simpler, because what is left are two differences that are large and easy to check.
Difference one: four inches of pizza
Ooni lists a 16-inch maximum for the Koda 16. Gozney lists 12 inches for the Roccbox.
That sounds like a third more pizza. It is more than that, because area grows with the square of the radius: a 16-inch round is roughly 1.8 times the surface of a 12-inch one. Two 12-inch pizzas is not far off one 16-inch pizza plus a slice.
If you cook for one or two people, 12 inches is a whole dinner and the extra capacity is dead weight. If you cook for four, you are running the Roccbox twice as often — and every launch pulls heat out of the stone.
Difference two: whether it moves
The Roccbox is built to travel and says so in its parts. Gozney gives it retractable legs, a detachable burner, and a safe-touch silicone jacket — that last one is the tell, because it exists so the oven can be around people and picked up.
The Koda 16 has none of that. Ooni lists it at 40.1 lb with no folding anything. You can move it. You would not carry it to a beach.
The specification that actually predicts your third pizza
Neither maximum temperature nor pizza diameter tells you the thing that most affects a dinner party: what happens after the first bake.
Ooni publishes a 0.6-inch cordierite stone for the Koda 16. Gozney does not publish a stone thickness for the Roccbox on its product page, so we cannot compare the two directly and will not pretend otherwise.
What we can say is why the number matters. Stone mass is what recovers floor temperature between pizzas. A thin floor gives a great first pizza and a progressively worse second and third while it catches up — which is the single most common disappointment with any oven in this class.
Fuel: one is simpler, one is more flexible
The Koda 16 is gas only, and Ooni offers it in propane and natural gas versions. That is the whole story, which is a feature: nothing to learn, nothing to manage.
The Roccbox ships with a propane burner and takes an optional detachable wood burner. So wood is available, but as a separate purchase rather than something the oven does as sold. Buy it because you intend to use it, not because the option exists.
Who each one is for
Take the Koda 16 if the oven has a home. The larger pizza is the single biggest practical difference between these two, its stone thickness is at least a published number rather than an unknown, and gas-only means there is very little to get wrong.
Take the Roccbox if the oven has to move, or if space is genuinely tight. Twelve inches is a real constraint rather than a marketing one — but retractable legs and a jacket you can touch are real features the Koda 16 simply does not have.
Whichever you land on, the dough is the same problem: the calculator will size the balls to your oven.
Common questions
- Is the Ooni Koda 16 or the Gozney Roccbox hotter?
- Neither. Ooni states 950°F for the Koda 16 and Gozney states 950°F (500°C) for the Roccbox. Anyone telling you one runs hotter than the other is not quoting the manufacturers, who publish the same ceiling.
- Can the Roccbox really make a 16-inch pizza?
- No. Gozney publishes a 12-inch maximum. If you want 16-inch pizzas the Roccbox is the wrong oven, and no technique closes a four-inch gap.
- Which one is more portable?
- The Roccbox, and it is not close. Gozney gives it retractable legs, a detachable burner and a safe-touch silicone jacket. The Koda 16 is a 40.1 lb box with no folding parts — movable, but not portable in the sense of putting it in a car boot.
- Does the Roccbox burn wood?
- With the optional detachable wood burner, yes. It ships with a propane burner, so wood is an extra purchase rather than something the oven does out of the box.
